Love this! I’ve found that holding two seemingly opposing ideas doesn’t create tension so much as perspective, if you allow it. They inform each other in ways that only become visible when they’re allowed to exist in dynamic relationship with one another.
I really connected with what you said about confidence, it’s calm and grounded, forged through the tough moments we’ve endured. Each obstacle helps us grow stronger and refines the essence of who we are inside.
Great article man, really needed to hear this today. I like what you said about the body and the mind learning to trust each other through discipline. I never saw it that way, but I do see it as discipline & structure have become bigger tenants of my life lately. Keep it up Ryan, always lovin your writing!
Learning how to embrace the paradox of being human instead of clinging to black and white thinking has been a significant endeavor for me in my 20s. It can be hard to wrap our heads around nuance and find value in embodying both extremes, so I really appreciated the practical reflection you included at the end. Excellent article as always, Ryan!
Love especially the part about the confidence. It’s quiet and is coming from hard things, as you wrote. We are building confidence with hard stuff and situations in our lives. We are shaping our inner soul.
Something I heard once was that we resort to ‘negative’ emotions because our brain has learnt that they serve us in some way. Greed has helped us survive at primary school when there was only so many toys to go around, boasting our results was learnt because that was needed to get into a good team, etc.
So as you said, understanding where these things have come from is important to say, ‘I actually don’t need this in my life anymore’.

"I’ve learned to speak up when I have something to add and to listen twice as much when I don’t."
Powerful sentence, keep delivering these, my man, they're wrapped in gold!
